Coaching is becoming the norm

New study on coaching for top managers

(Kienbaum & Harvard Business Review (12/2007, 201 companies)

Coaching, understood as meaning process support in challenging management situations, serves to improve self-perception/the perception of others and clarify and structure new roles and responsibilities. It is arranged in the course of target agreement discussions and/or employee reviews. The person being coached normally selects a coach from a defined pool of external coaches. Selection criteria are coaching qualifications, professional and management experience and personal manner. According to the study, a formal "coaching agreement" or a standardised coaching process (confidentiality protection, form of evaluation, etc.) only exists in 26% of all companies. The study found the most pressing need for action in the areas of systematic evaluation and a follow-up process to the coaching.

Achieving more in less and less time

"It is not that we have a short time to live, but that we waste a lot of it," noted the Roman philosopher, dramatist and statesman Seneca.

In this day and age, more and more people feel their office routine to be a strain. The demand of having to solve increasingly complex problems under extreme time and organisational pressure, without additional working time being made available, is a particular burden.

To achieve "high quality work", it can be helpful to learn about and apply work techniques and tools for effectively completing tasks and reducing time pressure. In our seminars we support you in critically reflecting on your time management and working style. At the same time, you will develop your own personal strategic management system step by step.

"A shepherd knows his sheep" - Identifying, preparing and deploying good employees

What differentiates outstanding employees or managers from average ones? How can you recognise the behaviour patterns that are crucial for success? The Assessment Centre (AC) is a diagnostic procedure that provides you with information about your employees' existing potential.

A practical example from Continental AG: We have been conducting ACs for many years to identify potential managers: with an international focus at the Talent Diagnosis Workshop (TDW), but also for production, i.e. foreman (1st line) or head of department or production line (2nd line), and recently also a non-work-specific AC. A maximum of twelve participants take part in practical exercises, e.g. group discussions, individual presentations and an employee review for two days. As they do so, they are observed by line managers and human resources staff according to criteria defined in the Continental competency model, so that precise, individual development measures and recognisable potential can be derived.

Flexible English training at the Wall Street Institute

From 1 June 2008, we are offering exclusive special rates for English courses at the Wall Street Institute – modern e-learning as an interesting addition to classical classroom training. This offer is particularly orientated to participants who require a high degree of flexibility in their learning: you have the advantages of flexible time management, an individual language level, personal focus and compact learning units.

In each of the 25 Wall Street centres in Germany, you will find a highly modern multimedia system that projects you into virtual stories and lets you experience different speaking situations. At the same time, you intensively train your pronunciation, learn to understand different accents, intensively broaden your vocabulary and consolidate your grammar. In your personal training book you will find written tasks and homework exercises. Your native-speaking personal trainer will help you progress at regular intervals in learner-friendly small groups with a maximum of five students.

Felicitas von Elverfeldt ´
"Selbstcoaching für Manager"
orell füssli Verlag AG (2005),

128 pages (hardcover), ISBN 3-280-05143-6.

Self-coaching - does it really work? We were sceptical, but von Elverfeldt has convinced us. In her entertaining book, she addresses management level concerns with a tongue in cheek approach and a keen grasp of psychology. Choose from insights such as: "Fine polishing: How to make your diamonds gleam - Realistic self-assessment and convincing image" or "Patience: Do you pull on your flowers to make them grow faster? - Learning to be patient quickly" and "Eros of power: Putting concentrated power to the test - values and behaviour in top management". This book is suitable for managers who find time for reflection every once in a while.
