2010 will challenge the economy in special ways. Incoming orders and a growing optimism for the year have led to a gradual revival on the labor market. According to a recent survey of 800 executive managers by the Handelsblatt German companies have a positive outlook and create new jobs.
Demographic change and lack of skilled workers may become stumble stones for a rehabilitation of the market. Future competitiveness of your company, therefore, depends on how management and human resources can win and commit skilled staff and managers.
We will join you on this difficult path and support you wherever we can; may it be in interview trainings of your recruiters, in recruiting assessment centers, and in the implementation of your staff development scheme, respectively. We also help you expand your succession planning activities and advance your (inter)national high potentials.
Come talk to us – we accept the challenge!
Yours, Volker Maschmeyer

Developing international managers successfully
International development programs at Salzgitter AG in cooperation with CONTUR
In the beginning of this year Salzgitter Group started two international development programs in order to enhance the development and to broaden the experience of professionals by imparting interdisciplinary and business knowledge.
“The reason we run those programs cross-country is that Salzgitter AG is going international more and more.” Linda Witte, Senior Consultant, Management Development, points out: “We intend to increase intercultural awareness, self-reflection, and conflict solving abilities in international project teams and to foster cross-company as well as international cooperation. Thereby, we provide a platform for a group-wide international network and help young talents -as well as more experienced leaders- develop their professional skills. We hope that this will also have a huge positive effect on employee retention.” Training modules aligned to the company’s needs, a business simulation game, peer learning, a development center, and coaching sequences – a broad variety of methods sets the frame for an effective and interactive learning process.

Interview training for human resources staff and managers / executives
How do you know you decided for the right person?
Do you know the feeling?: After contracting an applicant you wonder whether you made the right decision. The new employee might not meet the expectations you had in your first impression. Had you asked different questions could you have known? Can you trust your gut feeling?
As human resources manager you are challenged in every recruitment interview to identify subject and inter-personal skills of an applicant in short time. After all, you represent your company and know its culture.
When recruiting avoid wrong decisions that only create additional costs by expanding your knowledge, strategies, and methods in interviews. Practice preparing and conducting structured interview situations in mock interviews of your own cases. Our training offer

Recruiting day: employee selection a different way!
A strategy for small and medium-size companies
FINANCIAL GATES, a publishing company for financial and manager magazines, requires highly different skills from its applicants. In order to pick right personnel with limited resources they have developed a specific recruiting scheme in cooperation with CONTUR in which several applicants go simultaneously through the same 3-step process: 1) a preliminary telephone call, 2) 3 short 30-minute interviews with different professional interviewers, and 3) 3 practical exercises - observed. The applicant changes rooms after each interview/exercise which are taken from everyday business. Assessment of the applicants is based on a catalog of questions that was developed together by Financial Gates and CONTUR and takes into account the needs of the publishing house. Observers and interviewers evaluate their notes together and select an applicant. At the end each applicant receives feedback according to the criteria of the catalog.
“We are very happy to have this new scheme for our recruiting process” Dr. André Hülsbömer, managing director and founding partner of the publishing house, says. “A year after implementing the new procedure we can say that we have not – different to former times - recruited a wrong person. The opposite is true: the recent new staff members have shown considerable quality. We had to learn that our former process – gut feeling – by far didn't show the results the new systematic approach does. We'd like to take the chance and thank our colleagues at CONTUR.”

Fit for foreign assignments and international management tasks?
TIP – a web-based questionnaire and feedback process
Despite or rather because of the quickly proceeding globalization cultural differences will be more pronounced and practiced in the future. In reply to international networking, people will experience the cultural specific, the local as peace-giving anchor. It will become more important to recognize the specifics of the own and the 'other' cultures and to look, aware of these differences, for the common. To be able to do this deep knowledge of cultural contexts as well as intercultural skills is required.
The online questionnaire “The International Profiler” (TIP) is an instrument for managers that want to prepare for international tasks or an international assignment as well as for anybody working in an international environment. TIP analyzes your preferred way of working internationally by assessing your personal skills according to selected criteria. After that a licensed coach will feedback the candidate on the results and raise awareness how to work with people from other cultures. Together with the coach the candidate will develop his/her own international role. more...

Are Interactive manager conventions impossible?
How to involve 90 executives actively in the topic of 'leadership'
We show you how this can be done: an effective lecture in combination with interactive elements – And all that in one morning session!
At the beginning there is an impulse in form of a short presentation inspiring to think about one's own leadership style. The paper introduces the different types of personality and asks the audience to find his/her 'place'. By visualizing the different types all participants can actually see which group they belong to. They will then work in small groups for discussion before they get together in their 'personality' groups. Common traits are identified and it becomes clear why it is so easy to feel 'uneasy' with the 'other' types. All participants are very active in this enlightening setting; there is no chance to just sit back. In the end everybody will take something home: awareness of the own leadership style and role and the expectations of their colleagues.
The result of this half-day seminar then is: together executives have received internal and external impulses and worked at their leadership skills. Sales staff as well as heads need to be able to anticipate their fellow employees and customers.
We are happy to work out and see all participants successfully through your next event!
