Course Description
Janssen’s Model® – „The Four Rooms of Change“
Janssen’s Model® describes “The Four Rooms of Change,” as Stockholm-based psychologist Dr. Claes Janssen calls his psychological model. As we navigate change, we constantly move through these four rooms: contentment, censorship, confusion, and the room of inspiration.
We all have experience with how we feel in each of these rooms and how we behave accordingly. In times of constant change, increasing complexity, and uncertainty, we see that many people find it harder to move out of the more uncomfortable rooms of censorship and confusion. This can lead to decreased performance, conflicts, low morale and illness.
Supporting change successfully and sustainably—whether for individuals, teams, or organizations. With Four Rooms, you have a pragmatic approach that is accessible to everyone and therefore inclusive.
- They make successes visible
- They involve people in the change process and lay the groundwork for dealing with resistance constructively
- They foster a culture of mutual respect
The Four Rooms of Change theory has been successfully applied worldwide for more than 30 years. Certified Janssen’s Model Program Leaders will guide you through the certification process.
Certification is a learning journey that incorporates a variety of tools and formats and supports the application of these concepts in practice.
This Janssen’s Model® certification is accredited by the International Coaching Federation (ICF) as Continuing Coach Education (CCE). ICF-certified coaches can use this Janssen’s Model® certification to demonstrate the following continuing education hours:
Core Competencies: 14
Resource Development: 6

Specific details of the Learning Journey:
- Drawing on your own experiences, you will work together as a group to develop the theory of the four rooms.
- They get to know the different aspects of life and can get a general sense of where they stand.
- You will explore the way through the rooms and learn how to work with them both individually and as part of a group.
- You will put what you have learned into practice on the second day and prepare for your practical assignments.
- You will learn about the CLAES AI-Coach® and how to use it, and you will be able to integrate it into your coaching processes with your coachees. Through examples, you will learn how to apply it in change management projects.
- The difference between change and transformation is examined, and various change models are compared to determine which is appropriate in which situation.
- Building on this, Personal Dialectics enables a deeper reflection on the dialectical spectrum between different perspectives. We will explore how Personal Dialectics can be applied in coaching and in conflict situations within a team.
- The Digital Pulsometer is a Janssen’s Model® tool that allows you to assess the current state of your organization or team. The results are available immediately, and you can work directly with your teams to act on the findings.
- We will test and apply these methods together as a group so that you are fully prepared to gain your first practical experience within your own team.
- Sharing insights on how you can use the Pulsometer with your clients to improve their Well-Being Index will help you expand your range of services.

FAQ
Many change management approaches operate on the cognitive level and describe process steps – such as Kotter’s 8 steps, Lewin’s phases, and others. They often describe what one should do to get people on board. Four Rooms of Change bridges the cognitive and emotional-social levels in a very clear, easily understandable way. This is particularly true for people without a background in psychology.
The underlying theory helps us recognize how our attitudes influence us in everyday life, thereby explaining the “why”. This empowers both individuals and teams to take responsibility and act on their own, thereby strengthening their capacity for self-organization intrinsically – that is, through the systematic process itself. It can also be combined with other systemic approaches in individual coaching. Due to its ease of access, it is directly applicable for the coachee – without lengthy theoretical explanations beforehand.
“The Four Rooms of Change” is the original model developed by Claes Janssen. The “House of Change” was published and used by Ashridge Business School. It is based on the Four Rooms. Ashridge added additional rooms, which Claes Janssen, however, did not consider necessary or helpful. The Four Rooms were developed based on Claes Janssen’s research on attitudes toward life.
He refers to this as the internal “yes/no” conflict and its resulting impact on the phases of change. The four rooms were developed based on this concept. The House of Change and the additional rooms are not linked to Claes Janssen’s scientific findings and are not necessary in practice. Furthermore, they are often misused in practice; for example, managers are told that they should move their employees out of the room of contentment in order to achieve change. The room of contentment fosters productivity and efficiency, and driving all employees into censorship and confusion is counterproductive.
A key finding of Claes Janssen’s research was that people deal with change differently depending on their mindset, and it is therefore incorrect to assume that everyone is in the same place in the same situations. This is particularly confirmed by research on resilience. The simplistic assumption developed in the House of Change from a managerial perspective – that everyone should be “taken along” through the stages simultaneously—therefore does not help to successfully shape change processes.
We are delighted that so many people use the Four Rooms in their training sessions and workshops. This demonstrates the model’s accessibility and the value it offers simply as an explanatory framework.
During the certification process, you will come to realize just how much strength and energy the development process – based on Claes Janssen’s theory – unleashes in people. The connection to the underlying theory enables deeper reflection and, consequently, expanded options for action for all users in a wide variety of everyday situations – in daily leadership, coaching, negotiations, conflict resolution, and, of course, in all forms of change.
